Luisa Meyer

Mrs. Luisa Meyer is an accomplished and innovative Spanish language educator, recognized by the Florida Foreign Language Association (FFLA) as the 2022 Teacher of the Year. She holds a Master’s degree in Education from The College of New Jersey and pursued doctoral studies (ABD) at Florida Southern College.

Originally from Caracas, Venezuela, Mrs. Meyer has resided in Florida for the past twenty-one years, bringing a deeply rooted multicultural perspective to her pedagogical practice. Over the course of a distinguished forty-four-year career—nine of which have been dedicated specifically to World Languages—she has profoundly influenced both students and fellow educators. Her contributions extend beyond the classroom, as she has actively engaged in professional development initiatives such as Polk County’s Language Labs and has presented at local, regional, and national conferences. Since transitioning from classroom instruction in 2024, Mrs. Meyer has continued to advance the field by sharing her expertise with colleagues and administrators.

Her instructional philosophy is grounded in the principles of student-centered learning, emphasizing acquisition through comprehensible input (CI) and Total Physical Response (TPR). Implementing these methodologies within a deskless classroom environment, she fosters active participation by incorporating movement, frequent brain breaks, and interactive review activities. This approach not only sustains student engagement but also facilitates meaningful language acquisition. Furthermore, by integrating authentic cultural materials and immersive experiences, Mrs. Meyer cultivates curiosity, intercultural awareness, and communicative competence among her students.
