Framing the angle on cultural products, practices, and perspectives isn’t always easy and without the right lens can lead to “cultural frankensteins”. Chelsea Lawrence is a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi with a B.A. in Spanish and a Masters in the Teaching of Languages. Since 2015, she has taught Spanish at UMS-Wright Preparatory School in Mobile, Alabama. Chelsea’s intermediate level classes take a deep dive into the Spanish language and culture especially of Central America and the Caribbean Basin with a focus on building linguistic and cultural proficiency in all 3-Modes of Communication. Alongside her colleagues, she has contributed to writing standards and curriculum for the World Language Department at UMS-Wright. Dedicated to her profession, Chelsea presents innovative teaching methods at the state, regional, and national levels and was recognized as the Best of Alabama Session 2023 and awarded the 2025 SCOLT K-12 Leadership Award. Chelsea serves as the Awards Director and Professional Development Director for the Alabama World Languages Association.
